An interesting experience
"When dawn with her rose red fingers shone once more..."
The Odyssey by Homer
One thing about Odysseus that interested me is that he is a very daring person with a large ego. One moment where this happens is when he wants to hear the sirens. I thought that this was ridiculous because the book had said that anybody who listens to their songs would try to swim to them and drown. He had his crew tie him to the mast of the ship and his crew put wax into their ears. As they sailed past the sirens Odysseus demanded that his crew let him go. After they passed the sirens Odysseus became the only man to ever hear the siren's song and live. Another thing that Odysseus does that I would consider ridiculous is that he killed all the suitors without hesitation. I became more interested in the book though some parts were hard to get through because they were and went too far into detail. Another trial I faced was the suspense. Many parts of The Odyssey were leading up to a large event that is very exciting. When reading I knew that there would always be a challenge Odysseus would face, and that he would need some way to get out of it.
Another part of The Odyssey that interested me was the fact that there was so much detail. Every scene is described vividly, so much that I can easily picture the event in my head. During book 23 when Odysseus is slaughtering the suiters, the Homer could of used very little detail and made it a very short book but instead he put every action into great detail. Another instance is when Telemachus is having a feast with King Nestor. The book lists every last detail to make your mouth water and make the imagination work.
Over time I began to enjoy reading The Odyssey, with ever book being a new adventure and reading about new enemies being tricked or killed, or a new ally or god helping him on his great adventure home. The author did a fantastic job making a book that has so much thought and time put into it that it managed to stay throughout the years.I wasn't sure wether I would like it or not because it was such a long book, but it was much better than I had expected. Though some chapters were not so exciting but did have some meaning behind them, but after reading those there was an ending that didn't quite feel right.
Finally I can go back to reading my books, but it was a good experience reading The Odyssey even if I wasn't extremely invested in the book.
