Expectations of the island city
Hong Kong is different from what you would expect. When I look at a picture of Hong Kong I see a rich city, but when I am there I found a dirtier and less modern place. Hong Kong is a very large city with two sides. One island is clean and filled with shiny new tech and cars while the other is covered in rats, filth, and beggars, however the liveliness is what you wouldn't expect. Daytime is nothing but congestion and exhaust in your face, but the night is filled with neon, expensive cars, and bright buildings.
I enjoy going places and visiting family. The plane trips to Hong Kong are long and boring, but we go because my grandparents live there and somebody needs to take care of them. is a very large city. Every time I go to Hong Kong the first thing I notice is the heat then the looks. Hong Kong is a separated city with a pristine side and a dirty side. Many go there for business reasons, but we go there to take care of family and because everything is cheap. The Kowloon side is more enjoyment than business because the streets are poor. Street vendors are everywhere selling restaurant food for half the price. Street markets sell the most "exotic" food and will barter just for fun.
Hong Kong really is a great city full of bright lights and new experiences, but I can't help but think that it's slowly going to disappear because of China. The island city is incredibly diverse with the rich and poor living in two separate areas you can really see the contrast.Hong Kong really is my home away from home and i'm starting to miss the great city. So if you want to go to China but don't want the crazy laws and distances between places, visit the island city.
